Five Minutes With Mark A. Smith, Geospatial Holdings Inc.

Geospatial Holdings Inc., a Butler County-based company, along with several other companies, recently was awarded an approximately $1.6 million contract to “research and improve the detection and accurate determination of buried utilities,” according to Mark A. Smith, founder and CEO.

The contract, awarded from the Transportation Research Board of the National Academies runs through March 2012. Smith said the project is an important one.

“As the need to improve existing and build out new underground infrastructure increases for the U.S. in the years to come, it is critical to be able to identify the specific location of utilities and conduits,” he said. “Geospatial’s role in this research has the potential to enhance procedures and develop standards for deep pipeline locating and mapping throughout the U.S.”

Smith, who founded the company in 2006, spoke to the Business Times about the contract and his company, as well as its trademarked Smart Probe technology system that will be used in the project. (Read More)
