Better ID Scanning at Airport Checkpoints Has Significant Statistical Support According to New Survey Results
Random Poll of 766 People in New York City Reveals Nearly 86 Percent Would Feel More Secure If All Air Travelers Had Their IDs Scanned by Airport Security
A public opinion survey conducted by The Investor Relations Group (IRG) of New York has found significant support for ID scanning at airport security checkpoints. Out of a total of 766 randomly selected people in New York City, nearly 86 percent said that they would feel more secure if all air travelers’ IDs were scanned using additional technology. An overwhelming number of those individuals surveyed indicated a desire to have their identification screened by additional technology, in order to further prove their identity and prevent individuals with false identification from passing through security.
On January 22, 2010, IRG staff members were stationed at various locations around New York City’s Financial District. A total of 766 randomly selected people were asked the following: “Would you feel more secure if everyone’s ID was scanned through potential terrorist lists at airport security checkpoints?” Among the respondents, 656 individuals (85.6%) answered “yes” and 110 individuals (14.4%) answered “no” to the question.
J. Kevin Moran, Vice Admiral USN ret., COO of IRG commented: “With the tragic events of September 11th still fresh in the memory of most New Yorkers, coupled with the recent breakdown in the security screening process at Schiphol Airport in the Netherlands that allowed the underwear bomber to board the flight for Detroit, our survey clearly points out that the majority of New Yorkers are not opposed to the use of additional scanning of their personal identification by technology in order to ensure their security. They clearly want greater security measures in place.”
In assessing some of the additional commentary that was reflected by participants, Admiral Moran added, “Interestingly, a good number of participants asked why the survey was focused exclusively on airport security—and not all municipal buildings as well as other mass travel outlets like bus terminals and train depots.”
The Investor Relations Group represents several clients in the national security sector, one of which is Intellicheck Mobilisa, Inc. (NYSE Amex: IDN) Intellicheck Mobilisa’s Defense ID System is an advanced, mobile, handheld ID card access control product that instantly reads, analyzes and verifies encoded data in magnetic stripes and barcodes on government-issue IDs from across the US and Canada, and compares the data to more than 100 criminal lists. The product is currently in use at Andrews Air Force base, home of the President’s aircraft, Air Force One.
When the survey results were shared with Dr. Nelson Ludlow, CEO of Intellicheck Mobilisa, and a former Air Force Officer, he observed the following: “Heightened security at airports is necessary and significant improvements in false ID detection can be accomplished in about 3 seconds, or less per passenger. Our company’s Defense ID technology could aid the Transportation Security Administration in its quest to ensure that all air travelers’ IDs are scanned to identify individuals of interest.”
The survey result also mirrors a sentiment recently expressed by New York State Senator Charles Schumer, who is urging air carriers to print encryptable bar codes on their boarding passes. “If [airports] checked the ID card and your boarding pass together, you could always check someone who is forging a boarding pass,” Schumer said on January 17th. “If they’d use the right technology and the right machinery, you can be both safe and quick.” And Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano recently asked lawmakers to support the Obama administration on the “budget implications” of the failed Christmas bombing attack, which could include increased funding for advanced screening technology and more security personnel.
