Cortex Pharmaceuticals is a neuroscience company focused on the discovery, development and commercialization of novel drug therapies for the treatment of neurological and psychiatric disorders. Cortex’s primary technology platform is a novel class of proprietary pharmaceuticals called AMPAKINE® compounds, which act to increase the strength of signals at connections between brain cells. New Treatments for Sleep Apnea Sufferers
Approximately one in ten women and one in four men exhibit signs of sleep-disordered breathing, an umbrella term for a set of conditions that includes sleep apnea. This condition is characterized by numerous interruptions of breathing, lasting 10 seconds or more, that occur while the individual is asleep.
Like Michael Jackson's Performances, Pain Killers Can Literally Leave Us Breathless
An injection of propofol (Diprivan) could have led to respiratory depression -- and subsequently cardiac arrest -- if Michael Jackson indeed used the powerful anesthetic to battle insomnia, emergency physicians say.
“Propofol is an agent that requires very close monitoring and is often limited only to use by anesthesiologists,” said Dr. John Greer, PhD, from the University of Alberta. “The main concern with this agent is the risk of respiratory depression, which, in turn, could cause cardiac arrest.”
Published Study Shows Novel Compounds May Help Protect Against Respiratory Depression

A paper that appears in the June 2009 issue of Anesthesiology details how AMPAKINE CX717, a Phase II compound created by Irvine, California-based neuroscience company Cortex Pharmaceuticals, demonstrated the rescue of fentanyl-induced respiratory depression and sleep apnea in rats.

The American Association of Nurse Anesthetists advises patients to avoid the following activities until anesthesia completely wears off: driving a car, operating complex equipment, signing any legal documents, taking medications other than those prescribed by your physician, and drinking alcohol.
